The Screaming Man

  1. THE SCREAMING MAN - A computer drawing that I created for, "Masters of the Weird Tale: Hodgson," published by Centipede Press in 2009.

The drawings and paintings that you see in books and magazines are mostly reduced images, measured in "inches," the original artwork can be much larger, often measured in "feet". Reduction is good for an artist whose work is rather large and rough because reduction sharpens the image and effectively hides the "roughness" of the original artwork. But it is not so good for artists whose original artwork is large and beautifully rendered with fine detail, because all that wonderful artistry is diminished when reduced to a few inches, making it hard to appreciate properly.

But it also works the other way; a small drawing that looks good in its original size can look terrible when enlarged too much; all the small un-noticed imperfections can become glaringly obvious. I never appreciated editors who enlarged my small drawings and used them as full page illustrations.

Anyway, for this presentation on my web-site, I am showing you how I would use a small drawing to make it a full pager; I let the "frame" expand the size of the overall illustration to make it a full pager, the size of the inside drawing is kept closer to it's original size. Most people don't really care about these kinds of details that are part of the world of illustration, and sometimes the editors don't seem to care either. But if an artist cares about his artwork, he cares about how it is presented.
